In mid January of this year our company felt the effects of Google's latest algorithm change, the mighty "caffeine". While I watched sites jump from one page to another in some cases in a matter of minutes I had a feeling we were in the middle of a storm that had not settled.
Has that storm settled?
Personally I believe the change is done however I'm sure there is alot more going on with Google than we will ever know. Just reading other blogs and even the google webmaster's forum you can see how rapidily people were losing positions, or suddenly being de-indexed and asking for help and advice. I remember reading about some poor chap that set up a video based website like youtube and discovered over 6000 pages had been de-indexed.
One thing really shined through to me over this period...how much control does Google have. The answer is alot...a hell of alot, I remember a client of ours calling Google "Skynet" a while ago and for the first time I actually could see what he meant. All these businesses that rely on quality traffic through the search engines suddenly lose business and get in a state of panic because Google changed.
Now What?
If I am honest I am thankful for the change and I see a massive benefit to our business. No longer will Google fill it's results with affiliated sites or those tricking the search engines and serving ridiculous adverts. I belive it has shook up the SEO community and the true ethical SEO guru's will emerge more victorious leaving the cowboys behind.
If you have been de-indexed there are the Google guildlines to follow, though in my mind there is only one guildline you need to know and remember.
Make a genuine quality website!
- This means do not fill your pages with copy content or a mass amount of keywords.
- Do not build your site if it's only purpose is to serve some sort of affiliated advertising, such as adsense.
- Make sure the website has a purpose, If it is feeding some valuable information for the user then the website is doing it's job!
How will Caffeine benefit CBW?
Simple, if you have researched caffeine on the web you will most likely be familiar with it's fundamentals.
- Speed
- Quality of website
- Quality of links
- More emphasis on Social Bookmarking
- Less exposure on video results
- More weight on exact keyword domains
It was that final bit, that made me think. Which company has the largest amount of keyword rich domain names in the UK. That would be the CBW Group. We have access to 10,000 domains based on different business categories and locations. Using our domains with quality websites could give a user a serious edge in the search engines over their competitors.
We have alot of clients out there now who have taken websites and domains from us and are performing extremely well. I have even noticed since the caffeine update these clients rise in position.
